Sykes & Son recently completed a project to install a cutting edge energy centre at Waitrose’s new superstore in Bracknell.

Only the second of its kind, the energy centre, powered by biomass technology using woodchips provides the newly opened 36,000 sq. ft. store with electricity, heating and chilled water for refrigeration.

Burning locally sourced wood chip, coppiced from Forestry Commission standard sustainable woodlands, the centre provides the branch with all of its heating, cooling and electrical demands, in addition to producing surplus power which is fed back into the national grid.

The new store, Waitrose greenest shop yet, has opened close to their head office in Bracknell, Berkshire. The store has incorporated a number of environmental measures to reduce carbon emissions.
