Sykes deliver a Mechanical and Electrical maintenance contract in partnership with EC Harris to The Courtauld Institute of Art, which is based at the North Block of Somerset House. The contract covers the Institute, Courtauld Gallery and Duchy House.

The Courtauld Institute of Art is a self-governing college of the University of London, which specialises in the history of art. The Courtauld Gallery houses a small but renowned collection, which includes world famous impressionist and post-impressionist paintings.

Whilst the Courtauld Institute’s requirements are unique and demand a totally bespoke service, the presence of Sykes as the incumbent FM contractors at Somerset House offers synergies to the Institute in terms of extra resources on site, specific site knowledge and the demands of SHT as Landlords.

Sykes have struck a very strong relationship with both EC Harris and also the ultimate client. All parties view the contract as the start of a long-term partnership. An emphasis on honesty and transparency was stipulated at contract commencement, and this has been a key focus of the service delivery.

Environmental impacts have been a key consideration throughout. At contract commencement, Sykes undertook an asset survey and dilapidation report. One of the recommendations was to upgrade the existing BMS system. The benefits of this ‘Spend to Save’ imitative were more effective monitoring, control and adjustment of plant and equipment, timed controlled switching of non-essential plant and equipment effecting energy savings, more effective management reporting and trend analysis to allow educated decision making on environmental strategy.
