Sykes have taken an active role in helping the RA achieve its environmental strategy and have completed a series of projects in a move to reduce energy consumption and improve sustainability.

In 2010, the RA implemented a Sustainability Strategy which outlines its aim to reduce its environmental impact as far as is practically feasible within the constraints of operating an art gallery in a Grade 2* listed property.

Subsequent to upgrades to the library and print rooms, Sykes installed a 30m plant pod onto the Burlington House roof to improve the environmental conditions of the Sackler wing of galleries.

Enabling works involving the early installation of 4 no. steel stanchions, erection of a designed two-lift access scaffold over the Sackler reception, erection of a luffing jib tower crane in the northeast part of the courtyard, removal of the existing environmental plant, installation of a new roof membrane on top of the existing felt roof, erection of a steel framework for the plant room, lifting, manoeuvring into position and installation of plant mounted on skids, installation of a proprietary Shueco cladding and glazing system and testing and commissioning of all plant.

The mechanical works included the installation of 6 no. new chiller modules and 6 no. new air handling units and ancillary equipment. The electrical works included changeover of services, removal of existing services, a new dual supply electrical infrastructure, primary electrical switch boards, lighting and power for the plant room, access lighting, services to mechanical plant, fire alarm and smoke detectors, data, lightning protection, gallery sensors, LED lighting for the Sackler and power factor correction. Works are now well underway on plant
